Following a devastating fire in February that claimed the lives of 137 people and left 16,000 homeless, authorities in Valparaiso have made significant progress in their investigation. Two men, Francisco Mondaca and Franco Pinto, were arrested on Friday in connection with the fire.
Chief prosecutor Osvaldo Ossandon revealed that the main suspect, 22-year-old volunteer firefighter Francisco Mondaca, is accused of physically starting the fire. Flares and fireworks were reportedly found in Mondaca’s vehicle, linking him to the crime scene. The second suspect, Franco Pinto, a former employee of the National Forest Corporation, is believed to have been involved in planning the crime.
Regional prosecutor Claudia Perivancich stated that there is evidence suggesting that Mondaca and Pinto had premeditated the act, waiting for suitable weather conditions to carry out their plan. The motive behind the fire, according to Mondaca’s testimony, was to create more work in fighting fires, indicating a potential economic incentive.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of more individuals being involved in the crime. The Commander of the Valparaiso Fire Department, Vicente Maggiolo, expressed his dismay over the situation but emphasized that this was an isolated incident that should not overshadow the department’s long history of saving lives.
Christian Little, executive director of the forestry department, described the arrest of a former official as a setback for the agency. Both the fire department and forestry agency have pledged to enhance their hiring procedures in light of this incident.
The fire, which began on February 2 in the Lago Penuelas nature reserve, raged on for several days, destroying over 10,000 homes in its path. This tragedy is considered the worst in Chile since the devastating earthquake in 2010 that claimed the lives of over 500 people.
