Accident – Death – Obituary News : Dr Rajesh Dere, a prominent professor and head of the forensic medicine and toxicology department at Sion Hospital in Mumbai, was granted bail on Sunday following a tragic incident on the hospital premises. The incident occurred on Friday night, when Dr Dere allegedly ran his car over a 60-year-old patient.
Dr Dere appeared before a holiday court in Bhoiwada on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by his lawyer Ayush Pasbola. Pasbola confirmed that his client was released on Rs 20,000 cash bail, as the offence was deemed bailable. He also stated that Dr Dere is fully cooperating with the police investigation.
The unfortunate event took place around 7.30 pm on Friday, as Dr Dere was leaving the hospital building to mark his attendance. While driving towards the punching machine, he turned left near Gate 7 and reportedly failed to notice the presence of a woman, subsequently running his car over her. The victim was later identified as Zubaida Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra.
Initially, the hospital did not report the incident to the police. However, upon reviewing CCTV footage of the premises, authorities discovered that Dr Dere was allegedly involved in the accident. Following the incident, Dr Dere contacted hospital authorities and admitted Shaikh to ward number 20. Despite efforts to save her, Shaikh tragically passed away during treatment.
Shaikh leaves behind her husband, two sons, and a daughter. Her son Shahnawaz revealed that his mother, who suffered from diabetes, had visited the hospital for a routine check-up on the fateful day. The police have filed charges against Dr Dere under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including causing death by negligence and rash driving, as well as relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Authorities are currently awaiting a medical report on Dr Dere to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Dr Dere, who played a pivotal role as the nodal coordinator for the BMC’s Jumbo Covid Centres in Mumbai during the pandemic, denied allegations of speeding within the hospital premises. He expressed his regret over the incident and emphasized that he personally accompanied Shaikh to the hospital for treatment.
In response to Dr Dere’s assertion that Shaikh’s death was due to cardiac arrest rather than injuries sustained in the accident, his lawyer refrained from commenting, citing the ongoing investigation. The case continues to unfold as authorities seek to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident..
