The Des Moines Police Department has announced the arrest of 22-year-old Bradwick Michael Tukes in connection with a shooting incident that took place outside a graduation ceremony at the Drake Knapp Center. Tukes faces charges of Going Armed With Intent, carrying weapons on school grounds, and reckless use of a firearm.

Police Response

The incident occurred at 5:39 p.m. when officers on duty at the Knapp Center heard multiple gunshots fired outside. The officers, who were providing security for the Roosevelt High School commencement ceremony, quickly responded to the scene. Two individuals, including Tukes who was armed with a handgun, were detained by patrol officers within minutes of the incident. More than 30 officers were deployed to secure the area.

A 17-year-old male, who was involved in a physical altercation but not directly linked to the shooting, was also detained. He was later released to his parents and referred to the Polk County Juvenile Court for disorderly conduct.

Chaos Ensues

The shooting outside the Knapp Center led to chaos inside the venue, with hundreds of attendees rushing outside to the scene of the altercation. A physical fight involving five individuals broke out, prompting officers to deploy pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Fortunately, the situation was quickly brought under control with no ongoing threat reported.

While there were no injuries from the gunfire, one adult female was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries sustained during the commotion. Multiple shell casings were found at the scene, along with another handgun located in a vehicle associated with one of the detained individuals.

The Des Moines Police Department’s detectives are actively investigating the incident and are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses. Despite the unsettling events that transpired outside the graduation ceremony, authorities have assured the public that the area is now secure and safe.
