In a tragic incident that occurred in the Laley Zhai area of Upper South Waziristan, a 13-year-old boy named Arman, son of Siddiqullah Mehsud, was severely injured in a landmine explosion three days ago. The explosion, which took place in Tiarza tehsil, has left the young boy blind.
Arman was quickly rushed to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dera Ismail Khan, where medical professionals made every effort to save his eyesight. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the boy’s eyes could not be saved, and he now faces a future without vision.
The incident has sparked concern among political and social leaders in the area, with Mayor Sarvekai subdivision Shah Faisal expressing his dismay over the rising number of landmine explosions in Upper South Waziristan. Mayor Shah Faisal revealed that Arman’s father, a shepherd by profession, was tending to his cattle in the mountains when the explosion occurred.
It is concerning to note that despite the government providing training to around 100 youths in different areas of Upper South Waziristan on how to safely remove explosive materials, they were not equipped with the necessary tools to carry out this dangerous task. This lack of resources has contributed to the increasing incidents of landmine explosions in the region since the return of locals to Upper South Waziristan.
Just last month, on May 3rd, two children were also seriously injured in a mine explosion in Makin tehsil of Upper South Waziristan, further highlighting the urgent need for measures to address this pressing issue.
As the community grapples with the devastating consequences of these landmine explosions, it is crucial for authorities to take swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Upper South Waziristan.
