Chennai: A 48-year-old woman, identified as Anjalai and a functionary of Tamil Nadu BJP, has been detained by the city police on charges of usury in Pulianthope. The arrest was made following a complaint from Mazar Khan, 44, of Pulianthope, who alleged that Anjalai had threatened him with exorbitant interest rates for a loan he had taken.
According to the police, Khan had borrowed ₹4 lakh from Anjalai in November last year for personal expenses. Despite repaying ₹8 lakh, which included interest, Anjalai demanded an additional ₹9.5 lakh from Khan, leading to his complaint and subsequent arrest of Anjalai.
Authorities have revealed that Anjalai has a history of similar cases against her in at least 10 police stations, indicating a pattern of usurious practices. She was apprehended by a police team on Saturday and is currently under investigation.

The case against Anjalai highlights the severity of usury and the plight of individuals who fall victim to such predatory lending practices. The police are actively investigating the matter to ensure justice is served and to prevent further exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
