A 26-year-old woman in Mumbai fell victim to a horrific crime when she was allegedly raped under false pretenses of securing a job on The Kapil Sharma Show, a popular Indian talk show. The accused, identified as Anand Singh, was apprehended by Mumbai Police following a complaint lodged by the victim.
Reports suggest that the victim and the accused had initially connected online a few days prior to the incident. Anand, posing as a well-connected individual in the television industry, lured the woman with promises of assisting her in securing a role on the renowned TV programme.
Deceived by Anand’s claims, the woman was led to believe that she would have to undergo an audition process to be considered for a position on the show. Anand further assured her that upon successfully clearing the audition, he would introduce her to the casting director for final selection.
Subsequently, the woman visited Anand’s residence in the Nalasopara locality of Palghar district for the purported audition. It was during this meeting that the accused allegedly sexually assaulted the woman, taking advantage of the situation.
When the victim resisted his advances, Anand resorted to physical violence and issued threats to dissuade her from disclosing the incident to anyone, as per police reports.
Upon mustering the courage to seek justice, the woman approached the authorities and lodged a First Information Report (FIR) under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Following the registration of the case, the police promptly arrested Anand and produced him before a local court. Subsequently, he was remanded to police custody to facilitate further investigation into the matter.
