A tragic incident occurred in Esplanade, Chennai, as a 17-year-old youth from Pulianthope was found dead on the sidewalks on Friday. The teenager, identified as Zakir, was allegedly addicted to injecting painkillers. His family suspects a drug overdose to be the cause of his death, but City police are awaiting post mortem results for confirmation.
Zakir, the youngest of three children, worked as a helper with an electrician for the past six months. On the fateful evening, he went to George Town with his friend Kashif to meet their mutual friend Abinesh, who had recently been released on bail. Abinesh resided on the platform in the area.
Unfortunately, Zakir collapsed and became unconscious during the visit, leading to his untimely demise. He was rushed to Government Stanley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Esplanade Police have taken his body for post mortem examination and have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Initial inquiries with the family revealed Zakir’s addiction to painkiller injections. However, authorities are probing whether his passing was a result of an overdose. A police officer stated, “Only after the visceral test can we confirm the cause of death.”
Speaking to the media, Zakir’s parents expressed concern about the prevalence of painkiller injection addiction in Pulianthope, their neighbourhood.
