The fire broke out inside an apartment at 371 Monroe St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 11:15 p.m. on May 24, prompting a swift response from 12 Fire Department units. Following the extinguishing of the fire at approximately 11:52 p.m., emergency responders discovered a 70-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive in a bedroom, alongside a 65-year-old woman suffering from smoke inhalation.

Tragically, the man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel, with his identity being withheld pending notification of his family. The woman was swiftly transported to Woodhull Hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.

Upon conducting a preliminary investigation, FDNY marshals determined that the fire was intentionally set. It is believed that the man and woman shared the apartment, although the nature of their relationship remains undisclosed at this time.

The woman in question has been identified as a person of interest in the case, with potential charges pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
