The conviction stems from the shooting of 14-year-old Jesse Everett of Willingboro in August 2021.
The tragic incident took place at a Phillips 66 gas station on the first block of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where Phillips encountered Everett in a car. It was later revealed that the car had been reported stolen just one day prior to the shooting. Phillips, who had frequently used the car with the owner’s permission, was on the hunt for the vehicle when he came across Everett. Without hesitation, Phillips shot the teenager in the head, leading to his untimely death later that day.
Fortunately, the three passengers who were in the car with Everett managed to escape unharmed. Following the incident, Phillips, who was known to frequent Willingboro, was swiftly identified as the prime suspect, leading to charges being filed against him the very next day. Ultimately, Phillips was sentenced for murder and weapons offenses on May 24 by Superior Court Judge Terrence R. Cook in Mount Holly.
