Thane: Following the apprehension of nine individuals from Mumbra and Nashik, the crime branch of Thane police announced on Friday that they have successfully dismantled a gang involved in the abduction and trafficking of infants.
Senior inspector Chetna Chowdhary of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell revealed that the police received a tip-off indicating that certain individuals from Mumbra were seeking potential buyers for a baby girl who was less than three months old.
Acting on this information, on May 22, the police deployed an undercover operative who posed as a customer willing to ‘purchase’ the infant for Rs 5 lakh. Subsequently, on Thursday, a man attempting to hand over the child in exchange for the money was apprehended near Reti Bunder. This led to the arrest of several other suspects involved in the illicit operation.
The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Sahil alias Saddam Hussain Makbul Ahmed Khan (32), Sahida Rafique Sheikh (40), Khatija Saddam Husein Khan (27), Pratap Kishorilal Keshwani (23), Mona Sunil Khemane (30), Sunita Sarjerao Baisane (35), Sarjerao Baisane (38), Shalu Khaif Sheikh (25), and Raju Manohar Waghmare (30).
A case has been registered against the accused under IPC section 370 (human trafficking) and the Juvenile Justice Act at the Mumbra police station.
According to official reports, Shalu Shaikh, the mother of the baby girl, has a three-year-old daughter and was facing severe financial hardships after separating from her husband. This desperate situation led her to consider selling off her infant daughter.
