FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – Alaska State Troopers reported a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday when a routine theft investigation escalated into a high-speed chase through downtown Fairbanks, culminating in the apprehension of a suspect by a police dog.
The incident unfolded around 10:30 p.m. when the Fairbanks Criminal Suppression Unit (FCSU), accompanied by K9 Kenny, responded to a report of a felony theft involving a generator stolen from a downtown property.
According to Trooper Scott McAfee, a K9 Handler for the FCSU, “A suspect vehicle was identified, and we located it driving on Airport Way near South Cushman. As it turned onto South Cushman, we attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped away at a high rate.”
The ensuing high-speed chase saw the suspect vehicle running multiple stop signs and dangerously speeding through residential neighbourhoods in downtown Fairbanks.
McAfee recounted, “The driver eventually abandoned the moving vehicle and fled on foot through the neighbourhood. We quickly gave chase with K9 Kenny.”
While the driver was apprehended by K9 Kenny, the passenger managed to evade capture and remains at large. The driver, identified as 39-year-old Fairbanks resident Ryan Shewfelt, had a $10,000 warrant for his arrest for probation violation.
In addition to the warrant, Shewfelt now faces charges including failure to comply with a Peace Officer’s directives, two counts of Controlled Substance Misconduct, and second-degree theft.
Following the arrest, Shewfelt was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the apprehension, before being transferred to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.
