FORT PIERCE — The community of Fort Pierce came together on Saturday to honor the memory of Roosevelt Benjamin, a dedicated U.S. Postal Service employee who tragically lost his life in a recent shooting incident. As a procession of postal service vehicles made its way past Benjamin’s home, fellow workers handed roses to his grieving widow, Jeanette Benjamin.

Many of those gathered wore Dallas Cowboys shirts, a tribute to Benjamin’s passion for the team, with his age, 59, displayed on the back. The outpouring of support and love for Benjamin was evident, with one of his siblings, Kim Benjamin, expressing gratitude for the community’s show of solidarity.

The Fort Pierce Police Department is still actively investigating the events of May 18, which led to the tragic deaths of Roosevelt Benjamin and two others, including a man who was killed in a gunfire exchange with law enforcement. Police spokesman Larry Croom provided updates on the ongoing investigation.

U.S. Postal Service workers on May 25, 2024, paid tribute to Roosevelt Benjamin, a longtime postal service employee who was fatally shot May 18, 2024, in Fort Pierce. Jeanette Benjamin, his widow, is seated.

Joe Cox, the manager at the post office where Benjamin worked for nearly 40 years, shared heartfelt memories of his time working alongside the beloved colleague. Cox emphasized Benjamin’s positive impact on his coworkers and the community at large, highlighting the significant loss felt by all who knew him.

Jacqueline Long, a longtime postal service employee, echoed Cox’s sentiments, describing Benjamin as a “wonderful guy” and emphasizing the close-knit nature of the postal service family. The emotional toll of Benjamin’s passing was evident as colleagues and friends gathered to remember his life and legacy.

Amy Magliarditi, a letter carrier who worked with Benjamin for 30 years, shared fond memories of their time together at the post office. Magliarditi praised Benjamin for his dedication and humor, noting that he had a way of bringing out the best in those around him.

The tragic incident that claimed Benjamin’s life also resulted in the death of Bernard Smith, 28, who had a history of criminal activity dating back several years. Additionally, Devin Bradley, 24, an employee of the Fort Pierce Police Department, lost his life in the same incident, leaving the community reeling from the loss of multiple individuals.

Despite his hearing impairment, Benjamin was known for his lively personality and sense of humor, as recalled by his colleagues. His ability to connect with others through humor and camaraderie left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
