WASHINGTON — (AP) — Mexican authorities recently extradited Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, also known as “El Nini,” a prominent assassin for the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel, to the United States. The Justice Department announced on Saturday that Pérez Salas will face charges related to drug trafficking, possession of firearms, and witness retaliation.

Pérez Salas is a key figure in a group responsible for providing security to the sons of the incarcerated drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. This group, commonly referred to as the “little Chapos” or “Chapitos,” has been identified as a major exporter of the lethal synthetic opioid fentanyl to the U.S., contributing to approximately 70,000 overdose deaths annually in the country.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated, “We allege El Nini was one of the Sinaloa Cartel’s lead sicarios, or assassins, and was responsible for the murder, torture, and kidnapping of rivals and witnesses who threatened the cartel’s criminal drug trafficking enterprise.”

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration had previously offered a $3 million reward for the capture of Pérez Salas, who was apprehended at a fortified property in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, in November last year. President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for facilitating Pérez Salas’s extradition.

President Biden affirmed the commitment of both governments to combat the fentanyl and synthetic drug crisis, which has claimed numerous lives in the U.S. and worldwide. He emphasised the joint efforts to bring criminals and organisations involved in producing, smuggling, and selling these deadly substances to justice.

Nicknamed “Nini,” Pérez Salas is known for his involvement in brutal acts of violence. Former DEA official Mike Vigil described him as “a complete psychopath.” Pérez Salas led a security team called the Ninis, notorious for their extreme tactics and military-style training.

According to court documents, Pérez Salas and his associates engaged in heinous acts, including the torture of a Mexican federal agent in 2017. The Ninis were involved in capturing rivals and taking them to Chapitos-owned ranches for execution, with some victims allegedly fed to tigers kept by the Chapitos.
