A notorious assassin for the Sinaloa drug cartel, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, also known as “El Nini,” has been extradited to the United States by Mexican authorities to face charges related to drug trafficking, gun offenses, and witness retaliation, the Justice Department announced on Saturday.

Pérez Salas is a key figure in the cartel and is believed to have provided security for the sons of the imprisoned drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. He was also involved in their drug operations, particularly in the distribution of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl to the US. The sons, known as the “little Chapos” or “Chapitos,” have been identified as major exporters of fentanyl, which is responsible for approximately 70,000 overdose deaths in the US each year.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland stated, “We allege El Nini was one of the Sinaloa Cartel’s lead sicarios, or assassins, and was responsible for the murder, torture, and kidnapping of rivals and witnesses who threatened the cartel’s criminal drug trafficking enterprise.”

Pérez Salas, 31, was apprehended by Mexican authorities in Culiacan, Sinaloa, last November. He was the subject of a $3 million reward offered by the US Drug Enforcement Administration. President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the extradition of Pérez Salas, emphasizing the joint effort to combat the fentanyl epidemic.

At the time of his arrest, Mike Vigil, former head of international operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, described Pérez Salas as “a complete psychopath.” The assassin led a group of security personnel known as the Ninis, who underwent military-style training in combat tactics.

According to court documents, Pérez Salas was involved in heinous acts of violence, including the torture of a Mexican federal agent in 2017. The Ninis, under his command, carried out brutal executions, with some victims reportedly fed to tigers owned by the Chapitos.

The extradition of Pérez Salas marks a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and violence associated with cartels. The collaboration between US and Mexican authorities underscores the commitment to dismantling criminal organizations that pose a threat to public safety.
