Following the arrest of nine individuals from Mumbra and Nashik, the crime branch of Thane police announced on Friday, May 24, that they have successfully dismantled a gang involved in the abduction and sale of infants.
The breakthrough came after the police received a tip-off about a group of individuals in Mumbra seeking potential buyers for a baby girl under three months old, as reported by senior inspector Chetna Chowdhary of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell.
Acting swiftly on the information, the police deployed a decoy customer on May 22, who agreed to purchase the baby girl for a sum of Rs 5 lakh. The operation culminated in the apprehension of a man attempting to hand over the child and receive the payment near Reti Bunder.
Subsequent arrests were made in quick succession, with the apprehended suspects identified as Sahil alias Saddam Hussain Makbul Ahmed Khan (32), Sahida Rafique Sheikh (40), Khatija Saddam Husein Khan (27), Pratap Kishorilal Keshwani (23), Mona Sunil Khemane (30), Sunita Sarjerao Baisane (35), Sarjerao Baisane (38), Shalu Khaif Sheikh (25), and Raju Manohar Waghmare (30).
The accused individuals have been charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 370 for human trafficking, in addition to the Juvenile Justice Act, with the case being registered at the Mumbra police station.
According to official sources, Shalu Shaikh, the mother of the baby girl in question, found herself in dire financial straits after separating from her husband. With a three-year-old daughter to care for as well, Shalu made the heartbreaking decision to sell her infant in exchange for much-needed financial support.
The investigation into the gang’s activities is ongoing, as the authorities seek to uncover any additional individuals involved in this heinous criminal enterprise.
