Accident – Death – Obituary News : Dr Rajesh Dere, a distinguished professor and head of the forensic medicine and toxicology department at LTMG Hospital, has found himself embroiled in a tragic incident that has shocked the medical community in Mumbai. The respected doctor has been arrested by the Mumbai police for his alleged involvement in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman patient at Sion Hospital.

The incident, which occurred late Friday night, initially went unreported to the authorities. However, upon further investigation and scrutiny of CCTV footage, it was revealed that Dr Dere was behind the wheel at the time of the tragic event. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Prashant Kadam (Zone IV), the incident took place around 7:30 pm on Friday as Dr Dere was making his way to punch his attendance in his car.

Tragically, as Dr Dere turned left near Gate Number 7, he failed to notice the woman on the ground and accidentally ran over her. Despite the severity of the situation, Dr Dere promptly called other hospital authorities and arranged for the woman to be admitted to Ward Number 20. However, the hospital failed to report the incident to the police immediately.

The victim, identified as Zubeda Shaikh, resided in Mumbra with her family. Her son, Shahnawaz, shared that his mother had been receiving treatment at the hospital for a cut on her hand that had worsened due to diabetes. Zubeda had visited the hospital for a routine check-up on the fateful day.

Following the discovery of the unconscious woman near Gate Number 7, the police launched a thorough investigation. The family was contacted in the early hours, and they arrived at the hospital on Saturday afternoon, only to receive the devastating news of Zubeda’s passing. Subsequently, a case was registered against Dr Dere under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Dr Dere, who had served as the nodal coordinator for BMC Jumbo Covid centres in Mumbai during the pandemic, denied any allegations of speeding inside the hospital premises. He maintained that he personally transported the victim to the hospital and admitted her to the ICU. Dr Dere claimed that Zubeda’s cause of death was a cardiac arrest and not injuries sustained from the accident.

As the investigation unfolds, Dr Dere is set to appear before the holiday court on Sunday. Authorities are working to determine if the doctor was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Additionally, they are looking into whether Dr Dere was on duty or leaving work when the tragic accident occurred.

The medical community and the public at large are reeling from this shocking turn of events, as they grapple with the loss of a valuable member of the community and the implications of this heartbreaking incident..
