Bodies of five victims in Marsabit mine landslide recovered

The bodies of five individuals who tragically lost their lives in a devastating landslide at the Hillo Mine in Dabel, Marsabit County, have been successfully identified. The search for two additional individuals who are suspected to be trapped within the mine is currently ongoing.

The unfortunate incident occurred at 3 am on Friday, May 24, 2024, claiming the lives of three Kenyan nationals and two Ethiopian citizens. In addition, two individuals sustained injuries, while two others are believed to be still trapped inside the mine.

The deceased have been identified as Hassan Duba Guyo, a 22-year-old Ethiopian national, Mohamed Hassan Hussein, a 35-year-old Kenyan, Jillo Adan Jillo, a 32-year-old Kenyan, Rashid Adan Warea, a 38-year-old Kenyan, and an unidentified adult male believed to be of Ethiopian descent.

The two survivors, Bonaya Mamo Abudho, aged 32, and Abdikadir Hassan, aged 26, are currently receiving medical treatment at the Moyale Sub-County Hospital.

The bodies of the five victims have been transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, where they will undergo postmortem examinations.
