Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has officially identified the man fatally shot by a Crookston police officer as 35-year-old Andrew Scott Dale from Crookston. The incident occurred on May 16 when Dale allegedly ran towards law enforcement officers with a hatchet.

A forensic pathologist from the University of North Dakota conducted an examination and determined that Dale succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. This information was detailed in a press release issued by the BCA on Thursday.

The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Nick Fladland, a member of the Crookston Police Department. Fladland, who has five years of experience in law enforcement, discharged his department-issued handgun during the altercation. As per standard procedure, Fladland has been placed on administrative leave following the incident.

During the confrontation, another Crookston police officer, Alex Rudnik, deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Dale. Rudnik, who has a decade of law enforcement experience, was one of the officers present at the scene. Additionally, Polk County sheriff’s deputy Matt Benge fired 40-mm foam less-lethal rounds in an effort to control the situation. Benge, with five years of experience, was also present during the incident.

The preliminary investigation conducted by the BCA revealed that just before 1 a.m. on May 16, officers encountered Dale walking in the middle of the road with a hatchet in hand. Upon spotting the law enforcement personnel, Dale purportedly charged towards them while brandishing the weapon. Despite the attempts by Rudnik and Benge to use less-lethal force, Fladland ultimately discharged his firearm, striking Dale multiple times.

Following the shooting, the officers on the scene immediately provided medical assistance to Dale before he was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, Dale succumbed to his injuries and passed away later at the medical facility.

Upon examination of the crime scene, investigators recovered the hatchet allegedly wielded by Dale as well as cartridge casings. Body-worn cameras worn by the officers captured segments of the altercation, and the BCA is currently reviewing all available video footage as part of an active investigation into the incident.

Once the investigation is concluded, the BCA will present its findings to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for further review and potential legal action.
