Thane, May 24 (PTI) – In a significant breakthrough, the crime branch of Thane police arrested nine individuals from Mumbra and Nashik for their involvement in the abduction and sale of infants. This operation has effectively dismantled a notorious gang that has been operating in the region.

Senior inspector Chetna Chowdhary of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell revealed that the police received a tip-off about individuals in Mumbra who were actively seeking buyers for a baby girl who was less than three months old. Acting swiftly on this information, the police set up a sting operation to apprehend the culprits.

On May 22, a decoy customer posing as a potential buyer agreed to purchase the baby girl for Rs 5 lakh. The trap was set, and on Thursday, a man arrived to hand over the child in exchange for the money. The police moved in swiftly and made the arrest near Reti Bunder in Thane. Subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of the other members of the gang.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Sahil alias Saddam Hussain Makbul Ahmed Khan (32), Sahida Rafique Sheikh (40), Khatija Saddam Husein Khan (27), Pratap Kishorilal Keshwani (23), Mona Sunil Khemane (30), Sunita Sarjerao Baisane (35), Sarjerao Baisane (38), Shalu Khaif Sheikh (25), and Raju Manohar Waghmare (30). They have been charged under IPC section 370 for human trafficking and also under the Juvenile Justice Act.

The mother of the baby girl, Shalu Shaikh, who also has a three-year-old daughter, was in desperate need of money after separating from her husband. This dire situation led her to consider selling off her infant daughter, highlighting the grim realities faced by vulnerable individuals in society.

The Thane police are continuing their investigations into this case to uncover any further links and ensure that justice is served. This successful operation serves as a testament to the dedication and commitment of law enforcement agencies in combating crimes such as human trafficking.
