Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The tragic multi-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian on I Street in Eureka is still being investigated by authorities. New details have emerged from a witness to the incident, shedding more light on the alleged hit-and-run and subsequent collision.

Emergency services, including the Eureka Police Department and Humboldt Bay Fire, responded to the scene of the multiple collisions on I Street, near 7th Street. The incident also involved a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision further south on the road, closer to 9th or 10th streets, where a pedestrian lost their life. Preliminary findings suggest that the same vehicle was involved in the collision with the pedestrian, as well as with multiple vehicles and a building.

When contacted for comments, Eureka Police spokesperson Laura Montagna declined to provide details on whether a suspect was in custody, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. She had previously stated that no arrests were made at the scene of the crash. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released by authorities, with the victim only being identified as a 66-year-old man on Thursday.

An eyewitness to the incident, Susan Schumaker, described seeing the pedestrian being struck by a vehicle and thrown through the air for a significant distance. She recounted that the driver accelerated away from the scene after the collision, leaving behind a group of bystanders who rushed to provide CPR to the victim while awaiting emergency services.

The multi-car crash involved at least five vehicles, one of which was unoccupied. Two individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment, although it remains unclear whether the driver responsible for striking the pedestrian was among the injured parties. A business premises, housing Impuestos King, was also struck by one of the vehicles involved in the incident.

Following the crash, police cordoned off several blocks on I Street to investigate the scene thoroughly. They conducted interviews with witnesses and gathered evidence to piece together the sequence of events leading to the tragic outcome. The Eureka Police Department has urged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward and contact the criminal investigations unit at 707-441-4300.
