A 42-year-old man has been handed a life sentence for the brutal stabbing deaths of two individuals in northeast Portland back in 2020. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the sentencing on Friday.

Phillip Lawrence Nelson was brought before Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Eric Dahlin, who imposed a life term with the possibility of parole after 35 years for the killings of Najaf “Nate” Hobbs and Cassy Leaton.

The incident occurred on June 16, 2020, when law enforcement responded to a stabbing incident on Northeast Davis Street. Tragically, both victims – Hobbs, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and Leaton, who passed away in hospital – were discovered by officers.

Following an intensive investigation, Nelson was identified as the prime suspect and subsequently arrested on June 18, 2020. He has been held in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center ever since.

After a trial that concluded on April 26, 2024, a jury found Nelson guilty on multiple charges, including second-degree murder for the death of Leaton and first-degree manslaughter for the killing of Hobbs.

In response to the verdict, Judge Dahlin handed down a life sentence for the murder of Leaton, with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Additionally, Nelson received a consecutive 10-year sentence for the murder of Hobbs, making him eligible for parole consideration after 35 years of incarceration, as outlined by the DA’s office.

Nelson will now be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin serving his lengthy sentence.
