In a tragic incident that took place in March, motorcyclist Robert Sayen lost his life after colliding with a Mobile police officer’s patrol car. The investigation into this deadly wreck has now been handed over to the Mobile County District Attorney’s office, as reported by FOX10 News.
Witnesses at the scene on Zeigler Boulevard and Cody Road described a chaotic situation, with several individuals claiming that the officer involved left the intersection following the collision. The officer in question has been identified as Paul Callegari and has been on administrative duty for nearly two months since the crash occurred.
Initially, the Mobile Police Department conducted an internal investigation into the incident. However, a Mobile County grand jury is now taking a second look at the case. Surveillance footage obtained by FOX10 News captured the moment of impact between the 67-year-old motorcyclist and the MPD patrol car at the busy intersection.
According to the traffic crash report, Officer Callegari was allegedly speeding, driving at an estimated 56 mph in a 40 mph zone through a malfunctioning intersection. Several 911 calls were made immediately after the crash, with some reporting that the officer left the scene.
It was revealed that at the time of the collision, Sayen’s traffic light was flashing red, while the officer’s light was flashing yellow. A city spokesperson mentioned that a city worker was on call and en route to fix the malfunctioning lights when the tragic incident occurred.
The district attorney’s office refrained from providing any comments due to grand jury secrecy. Contact was attempted with the lawyer representing Sayen’s family, but no response was received.
Officer Callegari’s involvement in another controversial case has also come to light, where he was captured on video punching a handcuffed man in a separate incident.
