Accident – Death – Obituary News : Durham, N.C. (WNCN) – The Durham Police Department has recently released a troubling report detailing a significant increase in crime rates in the city. Just this past Wednesday night, three teenagers fell victim to separate drive-by shootings, adding to the growing list of violent incidents in the area.

Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams expressed his concern during Thursday’s City Council work session, stating, “Neighborhoods are getting sprayed. They’re getting sprayed.” Police Chief Patrice Andrews echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. “This whole city shouldn’t be proud of what’s happening,” Andrews remarked during a press conference.

While the quarterly crime report revealed a decrease in murders at the beginning of the year, Chief Andrews stressed that recent shootings have negated any sense of progress. “The second quarter report is probably going to be astonishing,” Andrews cautioned. “Within a short period of time, we have gone from I think six or seven homicides to now we’re at 18 in almost a month and a half.”

One of the major challenges faced by Durham police is a significant staffing shortage, with only slightly over 400 sworn positions filled out of a total of over 500. This shortage has led to resource constraints, impacting the department’s ability to respond effectively to escalating crime rates. However, there is hope on the horizon as police pay is set to increase in the upcoming budget.

The latest report also highlighted a concerning rise in property crimes, with motor vehicle thefts experiencing a staggering 50% increase. Additionally, juvenile crime rates remain a pressing issue that authorities are working to address.

Chief Andrews emphasized the need for parental responsibility in curbing juvenile delinquency, stating, “We’re going to hold [parents] responsible, because it’s gotta stop. If you have these children, it’s your responsibility to raise them.” With summer approaching, city leaders are bracing themselves for potential challenges ahead. Mayor Williams acknowledged the need for a proactive response, stating, “We’re going to have to respond somehow, some way.”

As Durham grapples with the uptick in crime, community engagement and collaboration between law enforcement and residents will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation..
