A 43-year-old man in Pennsylvania was taken into custody this week on suspicion of murdering his wife and mother-in-law, following a gruesome discovery in their home. Leandro Barberena was charged with two counts of murder after authorities linked him to the fatal stabbing of 58-year-old Alma Barberena and her 75-year-old mother, Angela Trejo.
Philadelphia Police Department officers responded to a call concerning two unresponsive females at a residence in the 6000 block of Bingham Street around 1:30 p.m. on the day of the incident.
During a press briefing on Thursday afternoon, Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit Staff Inspector Ernest Ransom revealed that Leandro Barberena was the one who alerted emergency services to the grisly scene, describing the victims as “covered in blood.”
Upon entering the property, emergency responders found Alma Barberena and her mother in the basement, both drenched in blood and sustaining multiple stab wounds across their bodies. Tragically, medical personnel pronounced them dead around 1:45 p.m.
Authorities highlighted a crucial piece of evidence – a blood-soaked glove recovered at the crime scene. Ransom disclosed, “We also discovered at the crime scene, one glove covered with blood. A search warrant was executed on Mr. Barberena’s vehicle and we located a matching glove.”
Additionally, investigators noted defensive injuries on Leandro Barberena’s hands, which he attributed to a recent tile-laying activity. It is speculated that Alma Barberena visited her parents’ home to assist with a telehealth appointment for her father, prompting her husband to follow and carry out the fatal attack.
Approximately two hours after the alleged assault, Leandro Barberena contacted the authorities. The motive behind the double homicide remains unclear, with police confirming no prior reports of domestic disputes at the couple’s residence.
Neighbours expressed shock at the news, with one resident, Jack Burkhardt, telling Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI that the Barberenas were “excellent neighbours” and that the incident was difficult to comprehend.
