Accident – Death – Obituary News : As the search for two missing canoeists in Minnesota enters its second week, the Minnesota National Guard has been mobilised to aid in the search efforts in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, located near the Canadian border.

Governor Tim Walz authorised the deployment of the Minnesota National Guard to assist the St. Louis County Sheriff in locating and rescuing the two missing canoeists who disappeared on May 18 near Curtain Falls. The Governor’s office announced that the National Guard will be providing a CH-47 (Chinook) helicopter and four crew members for the rescue operation. Additionally, they will be assisting in transporting a boat and other essential equipment to the area, as requested by the sheriff’s office.

“No one anticipates their holiday turning into a crisis,” Governor Walz remarked in a statement. “However, when four canoeists went over Curtain Falls in the BWCA, this became a stark reality. My family understands the fear and heartbreak that these canoeists are experiencing. Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved, and we are incredibly grateful for the support from the Sheriff’s office and the National Guard in this mission,” he added.

Governor Walz’s personal connection to the Boundary Waters Area tragedy was highlighted, as his brother, Craig Walz, tragically lost his life during a storm in the same location in June 2016, according to CBS News.

In the latest update from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, it was reported that a base camp had been established to support the ongoing search operations. Over a dozen crew members are on the ground at the search area, with additional support provided for air operations and command posts.

Despite challenging weather conditions and rising water levels, the search efforts have continued with the assistance of various agencies, including the Minnesota National Guard. The sheriff’s office expressed gratitude for the favourable weather conditions and the collaborative efforts that have facilitated the transportation of equipment and personnel to the search area.

The two missing canoeists, Jesse Melvin Haugen, 41 of Cambridge, Minnesota, and Reis Melvin Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, have been identified. The search mission for these individuals has been ongoing since the incident occurred last weekend when two canoes carrying four individuals went over Curtain Falls in the BWCA, as reported by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

The search operation was launched following a distress call reporting the incident on Iron Lake, with one individual rescued and airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. The search for the missing canoeists was temporarily halted due to adverse weather conditions but resumed on Thursday.

Iron Lake and its surrounding area remain closed to the public, with ongoing efforts to locate the missing individuals. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad has emphasised the importance of cooperation from the public to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the search operations.

Earlier this month, a 62-year-old man was found deceased in Lake Agnes in the BWCA, with a capsized canoe and a life jacket located near the body. The victim, who was on a solo camping trip, is currently under investigation to determine the cause of death.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, spanning over 1 million acres with 1,200 miles of canoe routes, is situated approximately 250 miles north of Minneapolis. The U.S. Forest Service manages this vast wilderness area, offering a unique and pristine environment for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
