COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill has identified the victim of a fatal shooting that took place late Thursday night in Fairfield County, South Carolina.
The victim has been named as 23-year-old Eric Mayben, a resident of Winnsboro, SC. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Mr. Mayben on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, to determine the extent of his injuries.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at a residence on Comet Lane in the Jackson Creek Road area shortly before midnight on Thursday. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the deceased victim inside the home.
An investigation revealed that an unidentified individual approached the residence, fired multiple shots through the front door, and fatally wounded the victim. Surveillance footage released by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) shows the suspect wearing a piece of clothing over his face as he approaches the front door prior to the shooting.
Based on their findings, investigators believe that the shooting was a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence. The collaboration between the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office, Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) continues as they work towards solving the case.
