Accident – Death – Obituary News : Nearly 30 local police officers and four firefighters were recognised on Thursday, 23rd May, at the 48th annual South Bay Medal of Valor Awards luncheon in Torrance, as per a press release from the South Bay Police and Fire Memorial Foundation. The event, hosted by the foundation, celebrates the bravery and selfless service of police officers and firefighters who go above and beyond in protecting the South Bay cities.

Five officers from the Redondo Beach Police Department were awarded the Medal of Valor, the highest honour among the awards, for their heroic actions in stopping an active shooter at the city’s pier three years ago. The officers, namely Christopher Bushman, Angelica Chaires, Lauren Evelo, Joseph Rangel, and Sgt. Michael Strosnider, displayed immense courage and quick thinking in a high-pressure situation.

In addition to the Medal of Valor, four officers from the Hawthorne Police Department were honoured with Distinguished Service Awards for their role in saving lives during active crime and shootings. The ceremony also saw 19 Life Saving Awards being presented to police officers from the Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, and Redondo Beach Police Departments, as well as firefighters from the Redondo Beach Fire Department.

The awards luncheon took place at the Torrance Marriott and was attended by tables filled with police officers, firefighters, family members, and friends. The event was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and dedication shown by these brave individuals in keeping the community safe.

One of the standout stories that earned public safety personnel the prestigious accolades was the actions of the Redondo Beach Police officers during the active shooter incident at the pier. The officers responded swiftly to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots and wounded victims, ultimately neutralising the threat posed by the shooter.

Another noteworthy incident involved Hawthorne Police Officers John Broc and Tyler LaTona, who displayed exceptional bravery in responding to a shooting where multiple suspects were firing at a parked car. Their quick thinking and decisive actions saved the life of an innocent bystander who was caught in the crossfire.

The Life Saving Honorees included Redondo Beach Fire engineer Joseph Boehm and firefighter/paramedics Timothy Dennis, Ryan Shoda, and Garrett Todd, who successfully resuscitated a teenage boy who collapsed on a soccer field. Their prompt medical intervention and skillful treatment ensured the boy’s full recovery with no lasting health issues.

Overall, the 48th Annual South Bay Medal of Valor Awards was a moving tribute to the courage and dedication of the local police officers and firefighters who risk their lives every day to protect the community. The event highlighted the importance of recognising and honouring these unsung heroes for their exemplary service..
