In the heart of San Luiz, Arizona, bordering Sonora, Mexico, lies the Gadsden Elementary School District #32. With more than 5,000 students, over 99% of whom identify as Hispanic, the district is a melting pot of cultural diversity and academic potential. Within this district, Southwest Junior High (SJH) stands out as a beacon of success, with a student body comprised mostly of Latinx individuals, accounting for 96% of the population.

Dr. Cindy Trejo, author of a groundbreaking report by Rutgers University’s Samuel Dewitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity, & Justice, describes the achievements of SJH as nothing short of “magic.” As the director of Outreach FAMILIA at the University of Arizona, Trejo emphasises the importance of educators viewing their students as assets and believing in their capacity to achieve their college dreams.

Empowering Latinx Students

Through in-depth interviews with 10 former SJH students who were either in college or had graduated, Trejo uncovered the hardships, motivations, and preparation provided by the school. Grounded in Chicana feminist theories and indigenous perspectives, these interviews aimed to capture authentic testimonios from first-generation college-going Mexican Americans. By fostering connections and building trust through personal sharing, Trejo created a safe space for students to share their stories openly.

One of the key initiatives highlighted in the report is SJH’s summer school programmes, designed to give students an early exposure to college life. Partnering with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY), SJH offers students the opportunity to spend summers on a university campus, earning college credit and gaining valuable experience.

Mathematics Excellence and Cultural Support

Central to SJH’s success is its focus on mathematics education. From afterschool clubs to tutoring and dual enrollment courses, the school’s commitment to mathematical proficiency is unwavering. Students attribute much of their success in math to Jesus Arrizon, an award-winning teacher known for his innovative teaching methods.

Besides academic support, SJH stands out for its respect and support of students’ families and cultural backgrounds. Regular meetings with families to discuss educational opportunities and financial aid options demonstrate the school’s commitment to holistic student success.

Family Restorative Justice

What drives SJH students to persevere in their educational journeys is not just the promise of a job or degree but a deeper sense of “family restorative justice.” Students see their education as a way to honour the sacrifices made by their families and ancestors, propelling them to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
