A man was taken into custody in April 2024 on multiple child molestation allegations, and has had further charges levied against him as of Wednesday, as per a statement released by The Vancouver Police Department.
The individual under arrest has been identified as Daniel Gray, hailing from Portland.
Gray faces accusations of two counts of first-degree rape of a child, two counts of first-degree child molestation, dealing in depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, three first-degree counts of possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, and second-degree possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
An inquiry into Gray commenced in May 2022, prompted by a series of reports from Gray’s family members and their acquaintances, alleging that he had been engaging in sexual misconduct with young girls under his care for many years, and documenting his victims through photography. While the reports were deemed credible, the window for pressing criminal charges against Gray had lapsed.
The level and specificity of the statements indicated a consistent pattern of predatory sexual behaviour that could not be prosecuted due to the limited time frame of the initial reported abuses.
Investigators pursued additional information and evidence from Gray’s inner circle of friends, family, and associates, many of whom were hesitant to cooperate with law enforcement.
Over nearly a year of interviews, detectives identified a number of very young girls who had come into contact with Gray.
One interview provided a detailed account of recent rapes and sexual assaults.
Additional Charges
A follow-up investigation yielded sufficient evidence to arrest Gray on two counts of first-degree child molestation and two counts of first-degree rape of a child.
Due to Gray’s transient status at the time, police were unable to locate him, leading to the issuance of a federal warrant for his arrest.
Gray was apprehended in April 2024 in Portland.
Following his arrest, investigators raided the residence where Gray had been staying and executed a search warrant.
They discovered numerous digital devices, multiple cameras used for Gray’s ‘child modeling photography career’, and several bundles of amateur sexual drawings of children.
After an initial examination of the seized devices, probable cause was quickly established to charge Gray with further sexual abuse offences.
Gray is presently awaiting trial.
