Detectives from the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post are currently delving into the circumstances surrounding the death of a teenager in Auburn.
Shortly before 2:00pm this afternoon, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department received a distressing 911 call reporting a possible stabbing incident in the 1100 block of Irene Street, situated on the west side of Auburn. Upon arrival, Auburn police officers discovered an unconscious seventeen-year-old male in the yard of 1108 Irene Street. The young man appeared to have sustained a serious stab wound.
Despite the immediate medical attention provided by Auburn officers, alongside the arriving Auburn Fire Department and EMS personnel, their efforts unfortunately proved futile. The teenager was declared deceased at the scene by the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office.
An adult male, identified as a person of interest, has been detained for questioning. Investigators have reason to believe that the altercation between the two males was an isolated incident.
Following a request from the DeKalb County Prosecutor, detectives from the Fort Wayne Post have assumed primary responsibility for the investigation. They are being supported by an ISP Crime Scene Investigator, the Auburn Police Department, the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office, and the DeKalb Prosecutor’s Office.
The identity of the seventeen-year-old victim is being withheld pending notification of his family.
An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow morning at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne.
This remains an active criminal investigation by the Indiana State Police, with no further information available for release at this time. Updates, including the victim’s identity or any potential arrests, will be disseminated as they become available.
Upon conclusion of the investigation, the case will be handed over to the DeKalb County Prosecutor for review.
