Accident – Death – Obituary News : A Park Rapids woman, Anastasia Nicole Nelson, aged 21, has been found guilty of all charges related to a tragic Pine County crash in 2022. The crash resulted in the deaths of two individuals and serious injuries to two others. Nelson was convicted by a jury on two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of criminal vehicular operation. The vehicular homicide charges were specifically modified to include a blood alcohol concentration of at least .08 within two hours of driving.

Initially, Nelson faced two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of criminal vehicular operation. However, an amended complaint was filed last month, adding three additional charges. Nelson is scheduled for sentencing on the afternoon of Thursday, August 1, 2024.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on October 15, 2022. Charging documents reveal that Nelson, after allegedly consuming alcohol at a party, arrived at a woman’s home claiming to have been involved in a crash. The woman contacted law enforcement, and Nelson mentioned that three individuals were in the ditch, with only one able to communicate.

Deputies initially had difficulty locating the crash scene but eventually found Nelson at the end of the reporting woman’s driveway. According to the complaint, Nelson informed deputies that there were two vehicles involved in the crash, with one having left the scene. She then directed a deputy to the crash site at the intersection of Pokegama Lake Road and Fairway Road SW.

Tragically, two young adults lost their lives in the crash: 20-year-old Kiya Laural Joyce Johnson and 18-year-old Deandre Thomas Foss Sydney. The third individual, an 18-year-old man, sustained injuries and was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital. The severity of the injuries was highlighted by one victim being partially decapitated, with body parts found some distance from the vehicle.

Investigating deputies traced the path of the vehicle involved in the crash, noting damage to a fiber optics box, a power pole support cable, and a tree. Further evidence, including human remains and glass fragments, was discovered at the scene. Subsequent blood alcohol testing revealed a level of 0.09, indicating that Nelson had been under the influence at the time of the incident.

After receiving medical treatment, Nelson admitted to law enforcement that she should not have been driving, especially considering the condition of her friends. The maximum penalty Nelson faces is 50 years in prison and a fine of up to £100,000.
