Accident – Death – Obituary News :

French authorities took precautionary measures and apprehended a 26-year-old man in Bordeaux before the Olympic torch relay procession on Thursday. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed the arrest, stating that the individual was suspected of planning a violent act during the relay.

The suspect, identified as Alex G., came under investigation following alerts from France’s online extremism watchdog. The watchdog flagged posts referencing a 2014 mass killing in California, prompting authorities to take action.

After being arrested on Tuesday, Alex G. appeared before an investigating magistrate on Thursday. He was charged with criminal conspiracy but was released pending trial under judicial control. Prosecutors had requested that he be remanded in custody and have stated their intention to appeal the decision.

The Olympic torch was making its way through Bordeaux as part of a nationwide tour leading up to the Olympics, which are set to commence on July 26. Bordeaux is scheduled to host several football matches during the Olympic tournament, making security a top priority throughout the relay.

During the investigation, Alex G. admitted to considering carrying out an attack, leading the prosecutor to recommend remanding him in custody. However, no direct link to the Olympic torch was mentioned in the suspect’s statements.

Authorities discovered a video clip shared by Alex G. featuring Elliot Rodger, who was responsible for a 2014 rampage in California. The suspect wrote, “we miss you, Elliot,” alongside the video. Upon searching the suspect’s residence in a Bordeaux suburb, police found a revolver, a rubber bullet gun, several cell phones, and a computer.

Bordeaux prosecutor Frederique Porterie revealed that individuals close to the suspect described him as “psychologically very fragile.” Despite this, the appointed psychiatrist did not identify any specific disorder during their assessment.

Initial findings indicated an interest in the incel movement among the suspect’s online activities. The incel movement consists of men who describe themselves as “involuntarily celibate” and often express hostility towards women.

With the ongoing investigations and heightened security measures, French authorities remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of the Olympic torch relay and related events across the country.
