A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Erode, as a 50-year-old man named V Maathan lost his life after being attacked by a wild elephant on Bargur hills. The body of the deceased was discovered the following morning, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Maathan, a resident of Bejilatti Colony near Thamaraikarai village, was known for rearing livestock. On the fateful day, he was grazing cattle with his brother Perumal near the Irattai Kattu Pallam in Athani forest at around 4 pm. However, tragedy struck when Maathan ventured deep into the forest and was subsequently attacked by the wild elephant.
Perumal, who was with Maathan at the time, heard his screams and, along with other locals, rushed to the scene of the attack. It was a harrowing sight as they found Maathan lying injured from the elephant’s brutal assault. They wasted no time in contacting the Anthiyur forest range officials and the Bargur Police for assistance.
Due to the dense and dark forest environment where the incident occurred, the rescue team faced challenges in reaching Maathan. The treacherous terrain made it difficult for them to navigate through the wilderness, delaying their efforts to rescue the victim.
The loss of Maathan has left a deep void in the community, highlighting the dangers faced by locals living in close proximity to wildlife habitats.
