A female driver was taken into custody for driving under the influence following a concerning incident on Interstate 275 in Tampa. The arrest was made by an off-duty Pinellas County deputy who witnessed the driver’s erratic behaviour on Wednesday night.
Off-duty deputy’s account of the incident
The off-duty deputy observed a white Pontiac SUV weaving across lanes on the northbound side of I-275 near milepost 43 in Hillsborough County at approximately 11:13 p.m. The driver was reportedly displaying reckless driving behaviour, swerving from side to side within her lane and crossing over multiple lanes.
Despite the off-duty deputy activating his emergency lights in an attempt to pull the driver over for a traffic stop, the driver continued to drive erratically for a distance of seven miles. Concerned that a crash was imminent, the deputy executed a PIT maneuver at 11:22 p.m. to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Driver’s condition and admission
Upon interviewing the driver, identified as Taylor Ellison, troopers noted that she exhibited bloodshot and watery eyes, as well as a strong odour of alcohol. Ellison admitted to consuming several alcoholic beverages prior to getting behind the wheel, claiming that she was heading to Lakeland but was unsure of her exact location. She also mentioned being aware of the presence of a police officer behind her but expressed confusion about pulling over.
The affidavit detailing the incident highlighted that Ellison’s confusion was attributed to alcohol consumption and impaired memory, rather than a lack of understanding about the protocol for a traffic stop.
Arrest and charges
Following the assessment of Ellison’s condition and a subsequent breathalyzer test, which revealed a blood alcohol level of .150 – almost twice the legal limit – she was arrested and charged with DUI and failure to yield to law enforcement.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the importance of responsible decision-making behind the wheel.
