Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police have rescued a three-month-old baby and arrested four persons for attempting to sell her for Rs 4.5 lakh to a childless couple in Medchal-Malkajigiri district.

The individuals involved in the case have been identified as Shobha Rani, Shailaja, Swapna, and Sheikh Salim. A case has been registered against them at Medipalli police station, and efforts are underway to locate the child’s parents.

According to the police, Shobha Rani allegedly operated a child selling racket at her clinic in Peerjadiguda Ramakrishna Nagar, along with her associate Shailaja from Boduppal. When the Akshara Jyoti Foundation administrators learned about the illegal activity at the clinic, they conducted a sting operation by posing as a childless couple interested in adopting a child.

Initially, the clinic informed the couple that they did not have the means to arrange a child. However, after persistent inquiries, they disclosed that they charged Rs 6 lakh for a boy and Rs 4.5 lakh for a girl. The deal was finalized after the couple paid an advance of Rs 10,000.

On the scheduled day for handing over the baby to the couple, the police were informed beforehand. As a result, Shobha Rani and Shailaja were caught red-handed by the police. The baby has been transferred to Shishu Vihar, while the two accused have been taken into custody.

It has been revealed that the baby’s parents, who already had three children, were compelled to give away their child due to financial constraints.

Additionally, another individual involved in the case, Swapna from Uppal Adarshanagar, and Sheikh Salim from the same colony, have been detained for questioning by the police.

Police officer SI Prabhakar Reddy stated, \”The accused are providing conflicting information about the baby’s parents’ identity. Initially, they claimed the parents were from Chengicharla, but now they are alleging they are from Vijayawada. Investigation teams have been formed to trace the parents, and more details will surface as the investigation progresses.\”
