A team of doctors from Chennai and Trichy conducted a post-mortem examination on the exhumed body of a 42-year-old man in Villupuram. The procedure took place in the presence of the Villupuram district collector and superintendent of police, following a directive from the Madras High Court. The court issued the order in response to a petition filed by R Manju, the wife of the deceased individual known as Raja from Villupuram town.
The Madras High Court also instructed the district police to provide CCTV footage from the Villupuram taluk police station, where the man was taken for questioning. Raja, employed at a canteen near a state-run Tasmac shop, was apprehended by a group of police officers from the Taluk police station on April 10 for allegedly selling alcohol during prohibited hours.
Although he was released the next day at around 10 am, Raja reportedly complained of chest pain after being kicked in the chest by the police officers. His wife rushed him to a nearby government hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Suspecting foul play and possible custodial torture in her husband’s demise, she approached the high court seeking a re-post-mortem examination.
The high court granted her request and directed the district authorities to exhume the body for further examination, more than 40 days after his burial. This case has raised concerns about police conduct and custodial deaths in the region, prompting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Raja’s untimely passing.
