A tragic incident unfolded in Mirpurkhas on Wednesday as a 40-year-old cattle trader, Mohammad Yusuf Leghari, fell victim to the scorching heatwave gripping the city. The resident of Gulshan Colony collapsed in the cattle market due to the intense heat and was rushed to Civil Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed his untimely demise.

The relentless heatwave has not only engulfed Mirpurkhas but has also spread its fiery grip to Sanghar and its surrounding areas. In response to the escalating temperatures, various organisations, including political parties, social workers, and the district administration, have mobilised to establish heatstroke camps across different parts of the city. These camps are aimed at providing relief in the form of cold water and beverages to the distressed residents.

Urgent Appeals for Caution Amidst Rising Temperatures

Assistant Commissioner Tando Allahyar Faheem Shakir and Chairman Municipal Committee Syed Samar Abbas Shah Rizvi have issued urgent appeals to the citizens to restrict outdoor activities to essential tasks only and refrain from unnecessary ventures. These appeals were made during their visits to the heatstroke camps organised by the district administration.

In a joint effort to raise awareness about the dangers of the ongoing heatwave, a session was successfully conducted in Hyderabad. Additional Deputy Commissioners -I and -II, along with representatives from Rescue 1122 team and District Health office, engaged in an informative session at Spark School. The session not only provided valuable insights but also addressed various queries raised by the students.

Preventive Measures and Preparedness

Hyderabad DC Zainul Abideen Memon chaired a meeting where he directed officers to ensure that water and ORS supplies are readily available to vaccinators to safeguard them from potential heatstroke incidents. The meeting, held at Shehbaz Hall, was convened to review the arrangements for an upcoming anti-polio drive scheduled from June 3 to June 9.

The local Met Office has forecasted very hot and dry weather persisting across the Sukkur division, with daytime maximum temperatures ranging between 47-48 Celsius. Districts such as Sukkur, Khairpur, Jaccababd, and Shikarpur are expected to experience maximum temperatures of 47.5-48 Celsius. In response to these alarming predictions, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for the Sukkur division, urging concerned departments and district authorities to remain vigilant and prepared to tackle any unforeseen contingencies.
