Following an alarming incident at Hmong College Prep Academy in St. Paul, a man has been charged after allegedly attempting to gain entry to the school and threatening staff members with a machete.
The unsettling events unfolded on Monday when St. Paul police responded to reports of a man wielding a machete outside the school premises. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Marcelo Rubio Loredo, allegedly tried to enter the school through a locked door, prompting staff members to sound the alarm.
Upon arrival, officers found Loredo with the machete in hand. Despite being instructed to drop the weapon, he ignored commands and proceeded to flee the scene. A brief chase ensued before tear gas was deployed to subdue the suspect and effectuate his arrest. The machete was recovered along a nearby pathway.
According to witness statements, Loredo’s behaviour was erratic and threatening. He reportedly made aggressive gestures towards staff members, raising the machete in a menacing manner. As a result, the school was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
During police questioning, Loredo claimed to have been looking for food after leaving his job. He justified carrying the machete by stating that he had been working on a yard. However, he failed to acknowledge the fear and alarm his actions had caused among school staff.
Charged with two counts of felony threats of violence, Loredo is currently held in custody on a $50,000 bail. With no fixed address, he has been assigned a public defender for legal representation. At this time, the attorney has not issued a statement in response to the charges.
Additional Security Measures Implemented
In light of this incident, Hmong College Prep Academy has announced plans to review and enhance its security protocols to ensure the safety of students and staff. The school administration is working closely with local law enforcement to prevent similar threats in the future.
