Panera Bread Lemonade, Cardiac Arrest, Lawsuit

Panera Bread faces its fourth lawsuit over allegations linking its Charged Lemonade to health issues.

A legal case has been brought against the fast-food chain Panera Bread after a high school senior suffered a cardiac arrest in March following the consumption of the highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court for Eastern Pennsylvania.

The lawsuit alleges that 18-year-old Luke Adams bought a large Charged Lemonade on March 9 in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Later that same evening, while at a movie theater, Adams experienced distressing symptoms, leading to him becoming unresponsive. Witnesses, including two nurses and a cardiologist present at the theater, administered CPR and used an automated external defibrillator to revive Adams, ultimately saving his life.

Dr. Andrew Pogozelski, who treated Adams at Allegheny Health Network’s Forbes Hospital, highlighted that Adams was fortunate to have received immediate medical attention from trained professionals. “This was an unfortunate incident for an otherwise healthy 18-year-old, but fortunate that the individuals at the theater acted promptly,” Pogozelski stated in an interview with NBC News.

Medical reports included in the lawsuit pointed to “heavy caffeine intake” as the likely cause of Adams’ cardiac arrest. This legal action comes on the heels of Panera’s recent decision to discontinue the Charged Lemonade. This marks the fourth lawsuit against the chain, with previous cases citing two fatalities and one woman suffering permanent health issues linked to the caffeinated beverage.

The Charged Lemonade contained caffeine from both coffee and guarana extract. A large serving of the beverage could contain up to 302 milligrams of caffeine, according to Panera Bread. The Food and Drug Administration recommends a maximum daily caffeine intake of 400 milligrams for adults.

Allison Childress, Ph.D., RDN, an associate professor of nutrition sciences at Texas Tech University, highlighted the impact of the rate of caffeine consumption on the body. “The speed at which you consume caffeine can significantly influence its effects. Drinking a cold lemonade quickly during a meal can lead to a higher intake of caffeine in a shorter period,” she explained in an interview with Very Well Health.

Panera Bread has yet to issue a public response regarding the lawsuit.
