ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (WNCN) — A motorcyclist is facing multiple charges after leading deputies on a high-speed chase in Roanoke Rapids and being found in possession of fentanyl, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported on Thursday.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, deputies spotted a Honda CBR600 motorcycle on Tenth Street in Roanoke Rapids near Hardee’s. The motorcycle did not have a registration plate, prompting deputies to initiate a stop. However, the driver, later identified as 32-year-old Daniel Joseph Smith of Roanoke Rapids, accelerated and failed to pull over.

Ignoring a red light, Smith continued westbound on West Tenth Street, with the chase exceeding speeds of 100 miles per hour. The pursuit came to an end on Mobley Street after Smith’s motorcycle suffered engine damage.

Upon searching Smith, deputies discovered a folded lottery ticket containing fentanyl. As a result, Smith was arrested and charged with a range of offences including felony flee to elude, felony possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, driving while license revoked, and careless/reckless driving.

Smith was taken to the Halifax County jail where he is being held under an $11,000 secured bond. His court appearance is scheduled for June 26.
