Authorities in Florida have successfully apprehended a 52-year-old murder suspect, Corie Gene Phillips, following a novel approach by a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy posed as a recently deceased man who had been in contact with the accused, ultimately leading to Phillips’ arrest.

Phillips, a suspected drug dealer, was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder resulting from the unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, as per court records reviewed by Law&Crime.

Investigation Details

The investigation began on the morning of July 28, 2023, when deputies from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call regarding a deceased man at a residence in Castlebury, Florida. The caller, who claimed to work for the deceased man’s moving company, reported that the man never locked his house, allowing easy access for workers to enter.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered the deceased male next to the dining room table, with a plate containing a white, grainy substance that tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Sting Operation

During the investigation, authorities managed to access the deceased man’s phone and established contact with Phillips, who was identified as “Cory G.” The sheriff’s Digital Forensics Unit engaged in communication with Phillips, who expressed concern for the deceased individual’s well-being.

Subsequent interactions led to a sting operation where Phillips was caught in possession of a significant amount of fentanyl. It was revealed that Phillips had sold meth to the victim on the night of his death.

Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Phillips is currently held in Seminole County Jail without bond and is set to appear for arraignment on June 18.

An autopsy confirmed that the victim’s cause of death was attributed to a combination of meth, fentanyl, and alcohol, with meth and fentanyl playing a substantial role in the fatality.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the case to ensure justice is served for the victim and their family.
