Arsabh Ali, a 42-year-old resident of South Chandmari in Assam’s Lakhimpur, tragically passed away while in police custody at Khelmati Police Station.

Lakhimpur: The recent incident of a detainee’s death at Khelmati Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district has sparked outrage among local residents.
The deceased, identified as Arsabh Ali, was taken into custody by Khelmati police in connection with a stolen mobile phone that he had allegedly purchased. Sources suggest that Ali was suspected of being involved in a mobile phone theft gang.
Tragically, Ali fell ill and collapsed within the police station premises, leading to his untimely death. Following this incident, Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh took immediate action and issued directives via social media.
Immediate Actions Taken
“Regarding the death in police custody at Khelmati OP in District North Lakhimpur – 1. The In-Charge of Khelmati OP has been suspended along with the night sentry. 2. An independent enquiry has been initiated by Additional SP Biswanath. 3. All legal provisions and guidelines from NHRC/AHRC are being adhered to. 4. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) NR has been instructed to proceed to Khelmati at once,” DGP Assam GP Singh stated.
In a separate incident, a 32-year-old man and his minor ‘wife’ reportedly died by suicide while in police custody in Bihar’s Araria district. The man had recently married his 14-year-old sister-in-law, which led to their detention.
Locals allege that the couple succumbed to injuries sustained during their time in police custody. CCTV footage from the police lockup allegedly shows the man hanging himself with a piece of cloth.
Public Outrage
Upon hearing news of the tragic deaths, villagers in Tarabari surrounded the local police station, expressing their anger by pelting stones at the personnel and vandalising the station. The situation escalated as the mob set the police station on fire.
