A man has been detained on suspicion of planning an attack on the Olympic torch relay in Bordeaux, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced. The suspect, identified as Alex G, was apprehended by police ahead of the relay event.
Details surrounding the arrest remain limited, but prosecutors have revealed that the suspect had posted a concerning message online that appeared to glorify crime. The message also made reference to a past mass shooting in Isla Vista, California, which took place a decade ago.
The Olympic flame, a symbol of the upcoming Paris Games, had recently arrived in Marseille and was scheduled to pass through Bordeaux as part of its journey. The torch relay has been met with heightened security measures, with Paris 2024 organisers implementing an extensive security operation.
Bordeaux prosecutor Frédérique Porterie confirmed that an investigation had been launched following the online message linked to the suspect. During a search of the suspect’s residence, authorities seized a rubber pellet revolver, multiple mobile phones, and a computer.
