Several police officers in Blytheville, Arkansas were rushed to the hospital after being exposed to Fentanyl during a routine traffic stop.

The incident occurred on Friday, May 17, when Blytheville police officers pulled over a white GMC Yukon that had cut off an officer while patrolling the area of East Moultrie Drive.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers identified the occupants as 35-year-old Travis Leachman and 27-year-old Brittany Deason, both residents of Blytheville. During the interaction, officers detected a strong smell of Marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

A search of Leachman revealed a clear container with small baggies containing a crystal-like substance believed to be meth. Additionally, a small clear bag with suspected marijuana was found inside his left sock.

Further inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of a clear bag containing suspected marijuana, as well as four small blue pills believed to be Fentanyl. Additionally, officers uncovered five yellow circle pills identified as Clonazepam, and another clear baggie containing around 50 blue pills, also suspected to be Fentanyl.

Both Leachman and Deason were promptly taken into custody and charged with drug-related offences.

While en route to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office with the suspects, one of the officers began feeling unwell and pulled over. Subsequently, responding officers found him unconscious on the ground, having succumbed to the effects of the Fentanyl exposure.

The incapacitated officer was swiftly transported to Great River Medical Center for urgent medical attention.

Shortly after, the officers who had assisted in the situation started exhibiting signs of Fentanyl exposure and also lost consciousness.

Approximately an hour later, a nurse who had been treating the initial officer also displayed symptoms of a Fentanyl overdose and required medical intervention, bringing the total number of individuals treated for potential Fentanyl exposure to five.

Leachman and Deason were subsequently taken to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office by another on-duty officer.

On Monday, May 20, the suspects appeared in court for arraignment, during which Judge Shannon Langston set a bond of £1,000,000 for each of them.
