Accident – Death – Obituary News : PETERSBURG – A tragic incident unfolded in Petersburg’s Pecan Acres community on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a teenager and leaving another wounded. The Petersburg City Public Schools system took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their sorrow over the loss, revealing that the deceased teen was a student at Petersburg High School.

In a heartfelt post, PCPS shared, “PCPS is devastated to announce the heartbreaking news of a tragic loss within our school community [praying hands emoji]. We are deeply saddened to confirm that a student from Petersburg High School was fatally shot last night.” The post continued, extending thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family, friends, and the entire PHS community during this challenging time.

The victim was identified by Petersburg Police as 17-year-old Tamarri Mason, while the second individual involved, a 15-year-old male, sustained a non-life threatening injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Deputy Chief Emanuel Chambliss disclosed that Mason and the other youth were discovered with gunshot wounds around 8:50 p.m. in the 600 block of Cottonwood Drive. Tragically, Mason had succumbed to his injuries by the time emergency responders arrived on the scene.

Despite the gravity of the situation, no motive or suspect information has been disclosed by authorities. Police have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward by contacting Crime Solvers at (804) 861-1212 or using the P3Tips mobile app. This incident marks the third homicide in Petersburg this year.

Following the tragedy, Petersburg pastor Belinda Baugh, a prominent advocate for families affected by violence, expressed her frustration on Facebook, imploring for an end to premature deaths in the city. She shared, “I know for some it doesn’t seem to matter because it’s not personal. But if you ever stand out there and try your hardest to comfort someone when their loved one is laying in the street… you don’t know what to say, so you turn your face to the Lord and hold them and try to help them breathe in between each scream.”

In a separate incident later that night, around 1:15 a.m., police responded to a hostage situation at the Ivy Gates Apartments off South Sycamore Street. Reports from concerned neighbours indicated that two women were being held against their will in an apartment. Chambliss revealed that officers successfully rescued the women before encountering a brief standoff with the armed suspect, identified as Quantey McDonald. McDonald barricaded himself inside the apartment, leading to his arrest on charges of abduction and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Despite the tense situation, neither woman sustained any injuries during the ordeal. It was clarified by Chambliss that the standoff was unrelated to the earlier Pecan Acres homicide.

The day’s events serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by communities in the pursuit of safety and security. As investigations continue, the residents of Petersburg band together in support of those affected by these distressing incidents.
