The chief executive of Singapore Airlines has issued a heartfelt video apology to the passengers who were on board Tuesday’s flight SQ321, which was battered by deadly turbulence over the Indian Ocean. The incident resulted in the tragic death of one British passenger and left dozens more injured.

Goh Choon Phong, the CEO of Singapore Airlines, expressed deep regret for the traumatic experience that the passengers went through during the turbulent flight. In a video shared on social media by the airline, Mr Phong offered his condolences to the family of the deceased passenger, 73-year-old Geoffrey Kitchen, who was on a planned tour of Asia with his wife.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident, which has resulted in one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries. On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” Mr Phong said in the video.

Emergency Landing and Ongoing Support

Following the turbulent incident, Flight SQ321 was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok. Seven of the 30 people who were wounded in the incident remain in hospital in Bangkok in a serious condition. Passengers who were not injured have since reached Singapore on a relief flight.

Mr Phong assured that Singapore Airlines is working diligently to provide all possible assistance to the passengers and crew members affected by the incident. A relief flight carrying 143 passengers and crew members arrived in Singapore early this morning, with 79 passengers and six crew members still receiving medical care in Bangkok.

Passenger Nationalities and Embassy Support

According to the airline, Flight SQ321 was carrying passengers from a variety of nationalities, including British, Australian, Canadian, German, Indian, Indonesian, Irish, Israeli, Malaysian, Myanmar, New Zealander, Filipino, Singaporean, South Korean, Spanish, and American.

Officials from the British and Malaysian embassies in Bangkok have visited the injured passengers at the hospital to provide support and assistance. British passenger Andrew Davies described the chaos on board the flight, noting that many crew members were injured in the turbulence.

Recovery and Investigation

Passengers who arrived at Singapore’s Changi Airport this morning were greeted by Mr Phong and their family members. Singapore Airlines has pledged to extend all possible support to the affected passengers and is fully cooperating with authorities on the investigation into the incident.

Despite the tragic events, the airline is committed to ensuring the well-being of all passengers and crew members involved in the turbulent flight. The safety and comfort of passengers remain a top priority for Singapore Airlines as they continue to provide assistance and support in the aftermath of the incident.
