The chief executive of Singapore Airlines has issued a heartfelt apology to the passengers on board a flight that was battered by deadly turbulence over the Indian Ocean. The incident occurred on Tuesday when Flight SQ321 encountered severe turbulence en route from London Heathrow to Singapore, resulting in one British passenger losing their life and dozens more sustaining injuries.

Emergency Landing in Bangkok

As a result of the turbulence, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok. Seven of the 30 people who were wounded remain in hospital in serious condition, according to Bangkok airport’s general manager. Passengers who were not injured have since reached Singapore on a relief flight.

CEO’s Apology

In a video shared on social media by the airline, CEO Goh Choon Phong expressed his deep regret for the traumatic experience that the passengers on board SQ321 went through. He offered his condolences to the family of the deceased British passenger, 73-year-old Geoffrey Kitchen, who was traveling with his wife on what was described as their “last big holiday” together.

Mr. Phong stated, “We are deeply saddened by this incident, which has resulted in one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries. On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

Relief Efforts

A relief flight carrying 143 passengers and crew members arrived in Singapore early this morning. Mr. Phong confirmed that 79 passengers and six crew members remain in Bangkok receiving medical care. The airline disclosed that Flight SQ321 was carrying passengers of various nationalities, including British, Australian, Canadian, German, Indian, Indonesian, Icelandic, Irish, Israeli, Malaysian, Myanmar, New Zealander, Filipino, Singaporean, South Korean, Spanish, and American.

Support and Cooperation

Passengers who arrived at Singapore‘s Changi Airport were greeted by Mr. Phong and their family members. He assured that Singapore Airlines would extend all possible support to them and fully cooperate with the relevant authorities on the investigation. Officials from the British and Malaysian embassies visited the hospital in Bangkok to check on the injured passengers.

Passenger Accounts

British passenger Andrew Davies recounted the chaos on board, noting that many crew members were injured despite the seatbelt sign being illuminated. Another passenger, Dzafran Azmir, described how some passengers hit their heads on overhead baggage cabins during the turbulence.
