SALINE COUNTY—A man from Kansas is facing a multitude of charges following a high-speed pursuit in and around Salina.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, a sheriff’s deputy spotted a black 2005 Ford Mustang travelling at high speed northbound on Ohio Street in Salina, as reported by Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan. When the deputy tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop, initiating a chase.

“Despite the deputy activating the red lights, the vehicle continued eastbound on Magnolia,” Soldan explained. “After making a U-turn on East Magnolia and heading back westbound, the vehicle accelerated away, reaching speeds of 123 mph in a 35mph zone near Magnolia and Belmont.”

The driver then proceeded to run a red light at Ninth Street and Magnolia Road before turning south onto Interstate 135, where speeds allegedly reached 127 mph.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper joined the pursuit once the driver, later identified as 24-year-old Salina resident Corey Cantrell, Jr., entered the interstate. Due to the excessive speeds reached on Interstate 135, the KHP decided to discontinue the chase.

Following a brief period, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office began receiving multiple reports of a dark vehicle speeding through town.

“Numerous citizens called dispatch to report a vehicle driving through town without any lights on at a high speed,” Soldan stated.

At around 10:25 p.m., Salina Police Capt. James Feldman received a report from a member of the public regarding a black Ford Mustang travelling on Quincy Street without headlights or taillights.

Feldman mentioned that an officer then spotted the Mustang in the 800 block of South Front Street, attempting to initiate a traffic stop. However, Cantrell failed to comply and continued driving at the speed limit.

“The officer attempted another stop at the intersection of Fourth and Wilson, but Cantrell proceeded northbound on Front Street, turning onto Fourth Street, then onto Bond Street, maintaining the speed limit without accelerating away,” Feldman explained.

After driving at the prescribed speed limit on Bond Street, Cantrell eventually turned onto Second Street and pulled into a parking lot at 500 East Crawford Avenue.

Upon pulling over in the parking lot, law enforcement officers contacted the Sheriff’s Office, leading to Cantrell’s arrest without any resistance. Soldan mentioned that deputies discovered a suspected THC pen during Cantrell’s arrest.

Cantrell is currently in custody facing charges including felony flee and elude, three counts of disregarding stop signs, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, improper lane usage, failure to signal, multiple speeding and racing offences due to the excessive speeds, as well as two traffic light violations.
