Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Human remains discovered in a creek in northeastern New Jersey earlier this month have been identified as belonging to a 26-year-old man who had been missing for 42 years, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The investigation was initiated on May 3, when a private nonprofit dive company reported detecting “submerged artifacts” in Overpeck Creek in the Village of Ridgefield Park, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

A collaborative effort involving state and local law enforcement agencies, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, and the county’s regional dive team was launched to confirm the presence of the artifacts, which were estimated to be around four decades old.

During the operation, divers from the county also discovered human remains in the creek. Additional forensic testing was required to establish the identity of the deceased individual.

Identification Confirmed

After conducting tests, authorities were able to confirm on Monday that the recovered remains belonged to Charles Murphy.

Charles Murphy, a resident of Maywood near Ridgefield Park, was last seen on April 28, 1982. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are still under investigation, as authorities had initially suspected foul play.

However, in 1984, an investigator stated that there was no evidence of any criminal activity related to Murphy’s disappearance.

According to reports, Murphy went missing after dropping off a friend in Ridgefield Park following a game at Yankee Stadium. He was with three other friends that night.

On-Going Investigation

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is withholding further details about the recent findings as investigators continue to review the results of the dive operation and forensic examination.

Last week, human remains discovered in Cooper River in the southwestern part of the state were identified as those of a woman who went missing in Camden almost 14 years ago.

The remains were found in the 2006 Hyundai Elantra owned and driven by 52-year-old Bernadine Waters Gunner.
