Baiju Mukhiya : “Daily Wager Arrested for Murder of 89-Year-Old in Mumbai”

Mumbai: In a tragic turn of events, a daily wage worker was apprehended on Tuesday in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly woman in Malad. Shantabai Kurhade, aged 89, was discovered lifeless in her residence in a Malad chawl on May 17. An autopsy report revealed severe injuries to her ribs and head.

Following the discovery of Kurhade’s body, investigators meticulously reviewed CCTV footage from the area as the chawl lacked surveillance cameras. During the scrutiny of the footage, law enforcement officials identified a suspect wandering barefoot in the vicinity. The individual was later identified as Baiju Mukhiya, aged 49.

According to police statements, Kurhade had recently relocated to the chawl, while Mukhiya had previously been a tenant in the same premises. On May 19, Mukhiya forcibly entered Kurhade’s residence with the intention of robbery. Aware of Kurhade’s financial situation as a beggar, he viciously attacked her and fled the scene with Rs 15,000 in cash. Kurhade was discovered unconscious after neighbours alerted the authorities. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries upon admission to the hospital.

As the investigation continues, the authorities are piecing together the events leading up to the heinous crime. The arrest of the suspect brings a sense of closure to the community, although the loss of Kurhade has left a void in the hearts of her loved ones.
